In the territory of old Tbilisi, in Abanotubani, at 13 Abano Street, there is an interesting space for both local and tourists from Georgia.  Samples of traditional Georgian clothes, swords, a collection of soldiers, books about Georgian weapons and martial arts - this is an incomplete list of things that visitors can see in the weapons museum.  Here you will also find samples that our ancestors used in their daily life.

 The guests of this museum with a different profile are hosted by Davit Nasaridze, an ethnoguide and the founder of the Weapons Museum.  He wore traditional Georgian clothes in 2017, and since then wears a chokha every day, and that's why he was nicknamed "Chokha".  The ethnoguide tells us how a lot of historical and modern things connected with the past of our country gathered under one roof.

Davit Nasaridze:

- Georgia does not have a military museum, I thought for a long time and finally I dared to create a private space where I would exhibit my personal collection and visitors would have the opportunity to touch all the things that interest them.  I think it is important in a museum when visitors have the opportunity to shoot a weapon, wear traditional clothes,such as chokha, shoot a flintlock gun, etc.  Initially, I opened a small museum on the territory of Anchiskhati, which existed for a short time, but I got a good experience there and learned what causes the special interest of tourists.  First of all, people are attracted by contact.  Also, according to my concept, I don't make inscriptions on things, and I introduce the samples of my collection to the viewer myself - I tell about them.  During the corona pandemic, unfortunately, the museum almost did not work.  At that time, we were already at a new address and I had a collection on display in Abanotubani, Abano St.  in the 13th.  Once water entered the basement and flooded some of the things.  In the summer of 2021, the owner of the mentioned space offered me to move to the second floor, and now the weapons museum is located at 13 Abano Street, on the second floor of the enamel shop "Akra".  And in the basement, we made a museum of medicine, where many books about herbal medicine are kept.

- What does the visitor find in the weapons museum?

- Everything related to war, battle and not only.  At first I exhibited plastic soldiers, which I have been collecting since childhood.  At the same time: “chokha”, stirrups, spears, horseshoes.  During the pandemic, I also became a YouTuber, historian and tour guide Vlas Vatsadze and I recorded programs in the territory of the Wine Palace hotel, or at my house, and we talked about Georgian weapons.  I would also like to mention that Giorgi Chkhaidze, the director of Wine Palace and "Brand Wine" , always supported us and his guests often come to our museum.

A few months ago, I received a response from people who are engaged in the creation of weapons, armor, crossbows and spears.  Akaki Makatsaria, Nikoloz Buchukuri, Beka Bukuri - they helped me a lot they made copies of old things for me to display, those exhibits which I hadn’t in the museum.

I also have a very interesting library on world wars, military commanders and weapons, books on the military history of Georgia, created by Georgian historians.  Recently, I added to the collection books on military topics, published in foreign languages ​​(English, German, Russian), which have not yet been translated into Georgian.  I continue to enrich the collection and in the future I will buy all the available publications on these topics.

In addition, I organize exhibitions and stage battle scenes in connection with the days of the battle.  This is a military reconstruction, and on the occasion of Didgori, Krttsanisi, Tashiskarobi, Martyopi, Aspindzoba, Marabdeoba, and Erekleoba festival, I will explain to the visitor what the historical weapons of that period were and talk about the era.

- What do you suggest to the young people who come to the museum so that they become more interested in the history of Georgia?

- In the last few months, along with contact, an interactive activity has appeared in the specifics of the museum, which I offer mainly to Georgian children.  In addition to the fact that adults can take photos with swords, flintlock guns, armor and helmets, I play games and if they answer 10 out of 20 questions correctly, I reward them with real, antique items.  I have prepared an interactive game for tourists as well, although there are few students among them, and therefore mainly local visitors are interested in this direction.

- About what content are the questions?

- I will avoid specifics, although naturally the questions are from our history, they refer to national clothes, military weapons, etc.  For example, "Why are the cartridges white" or "What was the kabalach used for?" This is not a lecture, but a game, but at this time children get necessary and interesting information.  For example: what is “shibak” (wooden tube for baby urination) , a cradle, why we had different clothes, weapons and even towers that our ancestors built, depending on the regions of country. I have also added master classes in chain weaving and making various things in the museum, which has become very popular for domestic tourism.  I am glad that the children like to visit and play with us, and at the end these visits end with a photo shoot.

- A photo session with Georgian traditional clothes, a chain shirt or weapons is especially attractive for the visitors of your museum, isn't it?

- Yes, both local and foreign tourists are very fascinated by such photo sessions.  There is no place in Georgia where you can put on a helmet, put on a chain mail or armor, hold a sword, dagger or a gun, they are given the opportunity to do so only here.  In my collection, I have not only Georgian, but also Roman, Greek and Persian armor of different periods, which can be worn by both teenagers and adults.  The location of the museum also helps us a lot, because there are baths nearby, a few steps away, and those who wish can take photos both inside the museum and outside - near the historical baths.

- How many people can you accept together and how much does it cost to visit the museum for a group or individuals?

- The museum can accommodate 10-15 people.  There is an archeology museum near us, and if there are more members in the group, some go there, some stay with me, and after some time they switch places.  As for the tax, I will not name a specific amount.  There is a donation with me, according to which citizens of Georgia leave about 5 GEL, school students 1-2 GEL, and tourists pay according to the provision of information and photo sessions, and this amount ranges from 10 to 50 GEL.  I am happy when visitors leave our space satisfied and tell me that this is one of the best museums they have ever seen.
