The Kashveti church was first erected as a small chapel by the Holy Saint, Father David of Gareji. In 1753 due to damage to the cathedral, commander of the special military district (sadrosho) of Shida Kartly, Givi Amilakhvari, built it with brick. The legend on this construction has been preserved on the left wall from the gates of a lower cathedral. Construction of today’s Kashveti cathedral started on November 12, 1904. The architects were L-P. Billiefeld, E. L. Andreoletti, brothers Agladze with the chief financier – David Sarajishvili.

The contemporary Kashveti was designed according to the layout of the church of Samtavisi. Its architectural feature is non-traditional location of iconostasis. Iconostasis is not placed between front columns but behind them in order to grant more space to clerics rather than worshippers. The construction used Algeti stone, Dzegami white stone, Italian marble. Cathedral has a plain ornament. Ornaments are picked from various churches of Georgia and are harmoniously dovetailed. The altar of the Cathedral is painted by a notable Georgian painter, Lado Gudiashvili.
