Georgias highland Mestia to host international adventure event Highlander for second time
Northern Georgia's highland town of Mestia will host an international adventure event Highlander Georgia from July 20 to July 22 for the second time, with the support of the Georgian National Tourism Administration, the state body said on Friday.
The event presentation and press conference were held in Satibe of Orbeti village near Tbilisi, with the Head of the GNTA Maia Omiadze noting she was delighted that such a “large-scale” event - part of the global long-distance hiking project - would be hosted in Georgia for the second time.
It [the event] gives us an opportunity to show the potential of adventure tourism in Georgia. [...] various countries, donor organisations are involved in the project, many foreigners are participating in it, [...] which [...] is a very good way to promote our regions, tourist products, hiking trails”, she emphasised.
Highlander Adventure Georgia, a licensed international hiking festival, with trails carefully selected by local guides to provide a unique experience for participants, is organised with the support of the USAID Economic Security Programme, the European Union, as well as the Swedish and Austrian sides.
Last August Georgia’s mountainous region of Svaneti hosted 110 experienced and amateur hikers from eight countries within the Highlander Georgia event.
