The construction of the longest tunnel in Georgia has ended. The 8.5 km-long Kvishkheti-Zvere tunnel is part of the Tbilisi-Makhinjauri mainline.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili said the project will play important role in developing the country’s infrastructure.

The implementation of this project will:

Increase the capacity of the railroad line,

Enhance the security of trains passing through this section and,
-
Reduce travel time, with trains covering the distance between Tbilisi and Batumi in a mere four hours.
The project is supposed to be finalised by 2020.

Railroad modernisation project is the part of the country’s Spatial Arrangement Plan.
Spatial arrangement means planning space in a rational, sustainable and balanced way; having integrated and territorial development of transport, construction, energy, tourism, manufacturing and other sectors; and improving links between towns and villages.
In addition, the Tbilisi-Makhinjauri mainline project is equally important for the development of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port. These two projects will substantially change Georgia’s transit potential and economic landscape, which is why we prioritise their successful implementation. These projects are going to make a tremendous difference in the country”, PM Kvirikashvili said.
Stressing that "every investment, every project serves the well-being of our citizens”, Kvirikashvili added that "our objective is to make effective use of the country’s potential and to provide our citizens with solid guarantees of a stable, peaceful, and better life”.
