Gozinaki with dried fruit - Modern version of Georgian New Year candy
16 December, 2015

Gozinaki is a popular Georgian candy made from honey and walnuts that is only prepared for New Year. If you want to decorate your New Year’s table with something new and easy but with traditional twist, then use your fantasy and make delicious gozinaki with dried fruits. Here is an extremely easy recipe of modern gozinaki that does not require such hard process as flattening and cutting the candy.

Ingredients:

2 cups of walnut and almond mixture
1 cup of oatmeal
1 cup of dried fruits (dried plums, cherries or apricots)
1/2 cup of honey
5 tsp of butter
½ tsp of cinnamon
1/3 cup of sugar

Preparation:

Roast walnuts, almonds and oatmeal over medium heat constantly stirring. When they reach golden color cut them into small pieces. In separate saucepan mix honey, sugar, butter and cinnamon (if you like) and bring it to boil over medium heat. When the mixture starts to foam, remove from heat and let it slightly cool. Pour dried chopped fruits and nuts into the saucepan and mix well.(You can add sunflower seeds as well to your taste). Place spoonfuls of the mixture on baking sheet, slightly flatten them and bake in the oven over 150 degrees until golden brown. But, be careful and don’t overbake gozinaki cookies. Place gozinaki cookies on a plate, let them cool and serve. Santa Claus would not resist these crunchy and crispy delights paired with a cold glass of milk, if you leave them under your Christmas tree.
