Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday announced his Government had allocated about ₾25 million ($10 mln) for the construction of a “new and modern” airport on the site of an existing airfield in the city of Telavi in Georgia’s eastern Kakheti region. 

Speaking at the Government’s weekly meeting, the PM said the airport was expected to receive its first passengers in May or June of 2024.

In total, there will be six modern airports in the country, and Telavi airport will create additional attractions for tourists and citizens”, Garibashvili noted. 

The head of the Government said design and construction of the new facilities would be launched this year, with the total cost of the project reaching ₾30 million (about $12 mln). 

He said the project involved extending the runway to 1,700 metres, installing modern navigation systems, renovating the "whole infrastructure" and adding new parking spaces.
