Ski Cross World Cup competition kicks off in Bakuriani
26 February, 2021

The Ski Cross World Cup has just started in the Georgian ski resort of Bakuriani which is hosting such a large-scale event for the first time in history.

In total 51 athletes from nine countries (Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, UK, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden and US) are in Bakuriani this month to participate in the event.

Georgian Economy Minister Natia Turnava said that Bakuriani is ready to host international competitions, including the 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championship.

Klaus Waldner, race director for ski and snowboard cross by the International Ski Federation (FIS), said that this competition gives 'a very good chance' to Georgia to cement its position as a country capable of hosting such events.

I am very happy that many people will discover such a wonderful country as Georgia, with its hospitality and nature", he said.

The Ski Cross World Cup will be held in Bakuriani on February 26-28 according to the rules and regulations of Covid-19 protocols released by the FIS. Bakuriani as well as other ski resorts of Georgia were opened for visitors on February 25 as the government of Georgia had decided to lift coronavirus restrictions.

However, cable cars will start operations only on March 8.

Bakuriani has prepared for the competition with new infrastructure: three new ski lifts were built, an artificial snow system was installed and new equipment was purchased to ensure safety.

Ski events will continue in March as well. On March 3-5 Bakuriani will host the World Cup races for snowboarding.
