National Gallery showcases “unprecedented” Georgian King Erekle exhibition

Tbilisi’s National Gallery showcases the exhibition King Erekle, the last lion of Georgia, dedicated to well-known Georgian King Erekle II, which will be displayed starting Sunday till October 16.

With the initiative and support of the Georgian culture ministry, the exhibition presents the rare artefacts of the monarch, some of which will be displayed for the first time, including his childhood toy, icon, which he wore on the bosom, guns and sabres, as well as robe, seals, manuscripts and books, the culture ministry said.

Cannons, manufactured in Georgia at that time, and canvases of well-known Georgian painters, dedicated to the Aspindza and Krtsanisi battles, are exhibited displaying Erekle’s military success.

The exhibition also includes the memorable artefacts of ecclesiastical items, donated by king Erekle to Svetitskhoveli cathedral, the emerald ear-rings of Queen Darejan, the golden and silver belts of  Princess Tekla, and the nephritis seal of King Giorgi XII.

The curator of King Erekle, the last lion of Georgia is Giorgi Kalandia, the director general of the Art Palace of Georgia. The opening of the mentioned exhibition was attended by Thea Tsulukiani, the culture minister, Nika Akhalbedashvili, the director of Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts, and Nino Chipashvili, the director of Tbilisi History Museum and Open Air Museum of Ethnography, as well as Guram Urchukhishvili, the director of Telavi Historical Museum and Mikheil Sarjveladze, member of the Georgian parliament.

This exhibition is held with the cooperation of Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts, Simon Janashia Georgian State Museum, Ioseb Grishashvili Tbilisi History Museum, the  Art Palace of Georgia - Museum of Cultural History, Georgian National archive, and National library at the parliament of Georgia. 

On the closing day, a bilingual catalogue dedicated to King Erekle and published with the support of the ministry of culture, will be presented.
