All construction works within the framework of the modernization of the Georgian Railway will be completed in 2022.
"The construction of a 9-kilometer tunnel on the Rikoti Pass has already been completed. This is a historic tunnel, a fairly long tunnel in terms of railroads. New stations, land vacancy works, and arrangements of rails will be completed. At the end of the year, signaling/communication works will be started in stages, and thus contacts will be established between the Eastern and Western Railways, ”said David Peradze, General Director of the Georgian Railway, during his visit to Business Partner.
According to him, the modernized railway will be put into operation in 2023. The capacity of the railway will increase from 27 million tons to 50 million tons. The travel time of passenger trains will be reduced by about 40-50 minutes.
According to the General Director of the Georgian Railway, the sharp increase in the load of the railway depends not only on Georgia but also on the countries of the region and the synchronous work of the corridor participants.
"If we follow different corridor players, such as Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Black Sea ports and terminals, it is realistic to achieve a 40% increase. Nothing happened unless the coronavirus pandemic was planned in 2019. There was a 37% increase over a 3 year period, we got a 21-22% increase based on Covid-19. It is realistic to increase by about 40% within this gap, unless of course there are processes in the region like in 2020, such as hostilities, "- said David Peradze.
