Suspension of Subsidies will Make Winegrowers to Produce Better-Quality grapes
30 July, 2018

“Suspension of subsidies will make winegrowers and framers to produce better-quality grapes”, Telavi Wine Cellar founder Zurab Ramazashvili told BM.GE. Noninterference of the state will shape healthy competition and real price of grapes, Zurab Ramazashvili noted.

“Vintage will not be subsidized and credits will mot be co-financed in the process of purchase of grapes. Previously, winemaking companies could take a cheap credit for purchasing grapes and later the most of part of this credit was paid by the state budget.

The Government introduced this mechanism amid fears that winegrowers would not be able to sell gapes and they would be left without incomes. Preferential loans were issued to this end to winemaking companies too.

And over the past years Georgian wine exports have considerably increased. No problems exist in wine sales. Consumption has increased within the country too and the government has taken decision that an extension of funding would be excessive luxury. I believe this is a correct decision and it will heal the market and shape real grape price”, Zurab Ramazashvili said.
