Road Department has been building a 2 kilometre tunnel in the 132-135km section of Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi motorway, at the junction of Dariali and Devdoraki Gorges. Irakli Karseladze, chairman of Road Department has visited the construction site.
At this stage, tunnel construction works have ended and tunnel coating works are underway. Approach roads and dams are being also arranged.
“Over the past years several natural disaster took place in Dariali Gorge and passengers were under real threat. Moreover, natural disaster resulted in suspension of transit function of Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi motorway and daily losses exceeded 1 million GEL.
After construction of these tunnels, the current problem will be completely removed and transportation in the Dariali Gorge will become safe. Tunnel construction is also necessary for maintaining the transit function of Georgia. The country will have stable transit road in this direction.
The project is financed from the state budget. The project is valued at 51 892 174 GEL. Construction works started in May 2017 and will end in November 2018. A total of 140 citizens have been employed as part of the project”, the Ministry officials said.
