chiatura is smail city, discoveriნg rich manganese layer caused it's foundation. Historical and Architectural monuments are clear evidence that this region was populated very long time ago Among these monuments are some unique ones, One of them is 40 metres high Katstkhi column which counts it's age before Georgia became Christian, that period It was used discovered on top of the Column(v-vI centure), very important is also X-XI monument- Katskhi Church, Darkveti Saint George church from XI century, also Rgani Saint George's Church X-XI century, XIII century Perevisa Church, Mgvimevi Nunnery and many others.
Former Argveti Country was becoming well-known from XIX century as a rich plase with manganese layer, as pioner of researching these territory is German scientist Herman Abich. But officially producting manganese is connected to famous Geogian poet and public man Akaki Tsereteli,who in 1879 started research of manganese layer and from this fact starts the history of town itself. In 1892 started to work railway road Chiatura-Shorapani, in 1902 was founded ''black mineral'' society, in 1904 was opened the first civil gymnasium, in 1906 worker's theatre, in 1907 lightening of central street began, town was on its way to development and in 1928 was opened manganese trust and since than begins new stage of town's development, it's cultural and intellectual evovle ion. Akaki Tseretali state drama theatre was built in chiatura in 1949. Which is one of the oldest in Georgia. The first rope way was built in 1954; nowadays there are 17 cable car stations in Chiatura which connects center of town to its suburbs. Cultural center was built in 1968, which became after the center of culture gatherings in town.
Nowadays Chiatura is populated by 19 650 people.
