Data 2020 : Georgian tourists made 1 million visits inside the country

About 910,800 Georgian tourists aged 15 years or more made one million visits (-37.2%) within Georgia in 2020. 

The number of visitors has decreased by 8.3% year-on-year, says the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

Domestic tourism resumed on June 15, 2020 in Georgia after months of lockdown due to the spread of coronavirus in the country. 

In order to promote domestic tourism the government of Georgia launched a new state programme 'Travel for Georgia' last year, while former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and other officials have encouraged citizens to travel in Georgia and visit its regions.

The Georgian capital city of Tbilisi was the most visited destination by domestic tourists in Georgia.

Here are top five most visited areas:

  1. Tbilisi – 22.8% of domestic travellers
  2. Imereti – 17.3%
  3. Adjara (Black Sea coast) – 11.9%
  4. Kakheti – 8.7%
  5. Shida Kartli – 8.5%

The top reasons for internal travel were:

  • Visiting friends/relatives – 45.9%
  • Visiting another property [summer cottage, house, etc.] – 15.8%
  • Shopping – 14.4%
  • Health and medical care – 8.6%
  • Holiday/leisure – 7.7%
  • Business or professional – 3.9%
  • Religion/pilgrimage – 1.5%
  • Education/trainings – 0.4%

Last year the monthly average expenditure during the visits equalled 147.1 million GEL which is a decrease of 4.2% year-on-year. As for the average expenditure per visit it has been increased by 9.5% and equalled to 141.6 GEL, says Geostat.

People aged 31-50 were amongst the most avid domestic travellers (38.8%). 53.2% of visits were made by women.
