28 November, 2023

CBS News, the news division of the American television and radio service, on Sunday released a 20-minute documentary on winemakers restoring ancient grape varieties in Georgia in its programme 60 Minutes.

Georgia, considered the birthplace of wine, has been making wine for 8,000 years. Producers are restoring the country’s ancient grape varieties and introducing Georgian wines to the rest of the world”, the intro to the programme said.

The production showcases “promoters and protectors” of ancient Georgian wines and opens with footage of the capital city of Tbilisi, before highlighting the eastern winemaking region of Kakheti.

It brings interviews with people like monks from the Alaverdi Monastery who produce their own wine, and introduces the traditional wine storage method in the country, where the liquid is stored in qvevri clay vessels buried underground.
