New birdwatching location unveiled in Georgia"s Vashlovani Protected Areas
08 June, 2022

A new birdwatching destination has been launched in the Artsivi (Eagle) Canyon of eastern Georgia’s Vashlovani Protected Areas, with visitors set to find crossing bridges and ecotourist spots in the area, the Agency of Protected Areas announced on Tuesday.

As a natural monument with beautiful landscapes, the Eagle Canyon offers a “special sight” to birdwatching enthusiasts, with various species of birds of prey nesting in the area including Griffon vulture, Black vulture and Egyptian vulture, the Agency said.

Additionally, ecotourists visiting the canyon can observe orb nests and rare and endangered plants - exclusive to the Vashlovani location - from the rocky slopes of the local gorge. Photo: Georgian Agency of Protected Areas

The locality’s subtropical environment is “particularly impressive” during the summer on the new Eagle Canyon hiking trail, the Agency added, noting the 1 km-long hiking trail went deep into the canyon to open up a view of waterfalls for those visiting.

The new infrastructure project is a joint initiative of the Agency and the non-governmental organisation Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus.
