Resort Sarpi
Categories
Coastline climatic resort of Sarpi is located right on the Georgian-Turkish border crossing. There is a check-point in the village. Sapri is the last point of the European backbone expressway 70 running across Georgia. Like Gonio-Kvariati, Sarpi gained popularity as a resort
during the last decade. In spite of the fact that its beach is no more than 3 km long, Sarpi is in top five of Adjara resorts and has no problem of vacationer deficit, as it has wonderful mountainous scenery, fine stone beach and the cleanest and transparent sea water in
Adjara resort zone. Administratively Sarpi is part of Khelvachauri municipality comprising historical Machakhela gorge. In the course of centuries roads of strategic importance for trade and economic development of Southern Georgia crossed Machakhela. In the first quarter of XVII century the Ottomans captured Adjara (includint Machakhela) along with Samtskhe-Saatabago and Lazika. This region returned back to Georgia only in 1878. Part of Machakhela – Zemo (Upper) Machakhela today remains as part of Turkey. In 2012 the gorge was declared National Park. The goal of founding this Park is preservation of organic agriculture, local architecture and cultural heritage as well as unique biological and landscape diversity. Machakhela National Park is part of ecological passageway that links together preserved territories of South- Western Georgia (Mtirala and Kintrishi) with North-Eastern preserved territories of Turkey (namely, Camili Biosphere Sanctuary).
