Museum of Georgian weapons at a new address - what the visitor will see in the historic building
05 June, 2023

Number 8 on Sioni Street in Tbilisi is the historical center of the capital, which is located on the main axis of the tourist route.  Previously, caravans in Tbilisi mainly gathered around the Temple of Zion.  The word "Karvasla" is of Spanish-Turkish origin and means caravan house.  It was a public place in the countries of the East, both for merchants and for distant travelers.

Among the caravans in Tbilisi today, the most famous is the so-called  Artsruni caravan, also known as Tbileli (Sion street N 8).  The first caravan was built on this site in the 17th century by King Rostom, but the building, like other nearby caravans, was destroyed during the campaign of Aga Muhammad Khan.  In the 19th century, on the site of the destroyed building, new building was built on the old foundation, which still exists today.

Among many others, there is one interesting space here - the Museum of Georgian Weapons, which carries an educational load not only for guests of our country, but also for local residents.  Samples of traditional Georgian clothing, swords, a collection of warriors, historical photographs, a rich library of Georgian weapons and martial arts - this is an incomplete list of everything that a visitor can see in the museum of weapons, ethnography and soldiers.

One of the main advantages of the museum is that it is contact, so you can touch any historical object with your hands, try on clothes and take a picture.  In a space different from "classical" museums, guests are welcomed by the ethno guide and the founder of the Museum of Weapons, David Nasaridze, also known as "Chokha".  From 2017 to the present day, he wears Georgian traditional clothes every day.  In order to better know the past of our country, the ethno guide introduces everyone to many historical and modern items from its collection and thus popularizes Georgian culture and history.

“Recently, the collection of the museum has been replenished with various items.  Among them: weapons - mostly swords, armor, gun barrels, figurines of soldiers, books, and at this stage there are already 1200 books in my library: about world wars, military leaders, weapons, books on the military history of Georgia, among them there are samples,  published both in Georgian and in foreign languages.

I added games for young museum visitors.  If they answer 10 out of 20 questions correctly, I give them ancient daggers.  I also prepared an interactive game for tourists, although there are few schoolchildren among them, and therefore locals are mainly interested in this direction - various schools and classes.  Questions from our history related to national clothes, weapons, etc.  For example: what was the name of the bag in the old days, why the cartridges are white, what for was balaclava hat, how the saddles differ, why the shibak is in the cradle, and the last question I ask about chichilak.  During such games, children receive the necessary and important information.  Finally, the meeting ends with a photo shoot, where those who wish are photographed with swords, helmets and chain mail.

I also actively cooperate with the guild of blacksmiths, organize exhibitions, stage battle scenes.  This is a military reconstruction, and on the occasion of the holidays: Didgori day, Krtsanidi day, Tashiskari day, Martkopi Day, Aspindza day, Marabda day and Erekle day, I explain to visitors what the historical weapons of that period were and talk about the era.

Since my museum is located in a historical building and this is a museum space in itself, this place is interesting in several ways at once: the central museum of Tbilisi functions in the building, and next to me is the wine museum.  I often cooperate with the latter, and we send to each other schoolchildren and tourists who want to get acquainted with Georgian culture, says David Nasaridze.

Finally, it should be clarified here that until now the Museum of Georgian Arms has been working at the address: Abano Street, 13, and since spring its new address is Sioni Street, 8. Plan a visit to the Museum of Georgian Arms, see the historical building, have fun and capture the mentioned  photo tour.
