Mountainous Ski Tourism

Ajara, the south-western region of Georgia, has great potential for ski and mountainous tourism. The development of ski and mountainous resorts has been recently started in Ajara. In highlands the climate is humid. Winter is relatively cold and long while summer is short and cool. Average height of mountains is 2000-2500 m. Ski and mountainous resorts are available throughout all four seasons for recreation, relaxation and entertainment.

The infrastructure of resorts is actively constructed in Shuakhevi and Khulo municipalities, namely:

In Shuakhevi Municipality: resort Gomarduli;

 In Khulo municipality: Kedlebi, Goderdzi and summer resort Beshumi.

Mountain Resorts

Resort “Goderdzi”

The resort of “Goderdzi” is located in Khulo municipality 2025 m above sea level. Currently the resort is under construction.  This hospitable, romantic resort place will start receiving guests for all 4 seasons from 2015.

Resort “Gomarduli”

Gomarduli Resort is located 1250 m above sea level. There are 5 hotel-type cottages serving guests of the resort, each with 4 rooms with 12 beds. Apart from cottages, accommodation is available at local guesthouses. Currently, a 300 m-long piste functions at Gomarduli.

Summer Resort “Beshumi”

Beshumi lies on the eastern slope of the Arsiani Range, seven km from the Goderdzi Pass, in sub alpine zone, nearly 2000 m above sea level. Dense coniferous forest found in Beshumi contributes to the healthy ionization of the air.  Thus Beshumi acquires treating qualities particularly for those with chronic respiratory tract diseases.

Beshumi is a popular summer destination for local population; however it is also becoming more and more attractive among foreign guests.  The resort is open from mid June until early September. Visitors can find accommodation at cottages and local guesthouses. Different public festivals are annually held in Beshumi depicting traditional lifestyle and local culture. Among them a festival “Shuamtoba” deserves special interest.   It is usually organized in mid August and features horse racing as well as other activities.
