Theatre

Ajara is one of the regions of ancient theatrical culture. Gonio fortress, Aspari or “Apsarunti” erected close to Batumi “was one of the ancient cities of Colchis in our era” (S. Janashia). In the sixth century Procopius of Caesarea, the Byzantine historian saw only the ruins of the theatre. According to him, Gonio once was equipped with theatre and hippodrome as well.

 

Batumi Ilia Chavchavadze State Drama Theatre

Batumi Ilia Chavchavadze State Theatre is one of the prominent sights in Batumi. The new building of the theatre was opened on 19 March, 1952. It was built according to the project by a famous architect from Moscow Teplitsky. The construction had begun as early as 1930s but was ceased due to World War II. The façade was architecturally decided according to the classical motif. It is faced with marble. The auditorium is circular with three circles and holds 600 viewers. The auditorium is beautified by a crystal chandelier. The painting of the hall and foyer is performed by an artist B. Beno.

 

Puppet and Youth Theatre

Puppet Theatre in Batumi counts its origin from 1930s. Similar type of theatre was opened in Batumi in 1936. The professional theater was formed on the basis of the former amateur puppet show. The building where the Puppet and Youth Theater Company is located represents one of the oldest and unique architectural monuments not only in Batumi but throughout all Georgia. It has the status of a national monument of culture. In 2012 the building was rehabilitated.

 

Batumi Summer Theatre

Address: Batumi Central Boulevard

Batumi Summer Theater is located in a central part of Batumi Boulevard and is designed for concerts and entertaining events. A wooden building with an original architecture is adorned with wooden ornaments and features a ceiling pained as an imitation of the sky.  The Summer Theater has a quite old history; however a renovated building has been functioning since 2013.

 

Khulo State Drama Theatre

Khulo State Drama Theatre is located in Khulo municipality and is distinguished by longtime traditions. The accomplishment of first amateur performances in Khulo in 1925 is connected with the name of a famous Georgian film-director Siko Dolidze. It laid the foundation to the formation of a drama circle in Khulo which gradually gathered many local stage-lovers. In 1958 People’s Theatre was opened in Khulo which was made into the Khulo State Drama theatre in 1992.  

 

Movie House “Apollo”

Address: № 17  Memed Abashidze Ave.

A movie house “Apollo” was constructed on a beautiful avenue of Old Batumi in the beginning of the 20th century. The façade of Art Nouveau style building is dated with 1911. The movie house was reopened in 2011 with a restored façade and an original name “Apollo”.

 

Batumi Circus

A history of circus in Batumi started in 1908. For many years a circus was a favorite place for Batumi locals as well as for guests. Nowadays the circus hosts different circus groups from various countries.
